CoRE Lab Student Studio

Learning to build human-centered systems

The Student Studio is a project-based environment where students work on real problems in human-centered computing. Rather than assignments or lectures, the studio runs in short cycles where small teams design, build, and evaluate interactive systems.

Projects often explore areas like AI-assisted programming, accessibility, and human-AI collaboration, but always from the perspective of how people actually use and experience these systems.

Studio Timeline

Spring '26
Interest and recruitment. Intro sessions and informal meetups.

Summer '26 (optional)
Small pilot projects with a limited group of students.

Fall '26
Full studio cycles. Project-based work and team demos.

How it works

  • 4–6 week project cycles
  • Weekly 1–2 hour studio meeting
  • Work happens primarily outside meetings
  • Small teams or individual projects
  • Ends with a final demo

What you’ll do

  • Work on a focused problem in human-centered systems
  • Build a prototype, tool, or interactive system
  • Test or evaluate how people use what you build
  • Present your work at the end of the cycle

What you get

  • A strong portfolio piece
  • Experience working on real systems involving AI and interaction
  • A recommendation letter for strong contributors
  • Optional path into ongoing CoRE Lab research

Who should apply

Students who:

  • want to build something beyond class assignments
  • are curious about how people interact with computing systems
  • are willing to work independently between meetings

No prior HCI experience required. Some projects involve coding, but not all.
